Spring Detox

Spring has finally arrived. I don't know about you, but winter seemed to linger on. The recent weather brings hope for a true spring season (unless it's just an early false spring). With that in mind, it's time to transition into the new season.

We often hear about "Spring Cleaning" for our homes, but it's also relevant for our health and well-being. During winter, we tend to conserve energy and retreat, but as spring approaches, we feel ready to let go of some baggage. It's a great time for a detox, and if your eating habits took a hit during the winter blues, the sunshine can be a motivating factor to take charge of your health and wellbeing again.

With that in mind, spring is an ideal time to begin a detox routine. Detoxing may not be suitable for everyone, especially individuals with chronic conditions and lower vitality, as this can overload your body a bit too much. If this applies to you, opt for a simpler detox approach. Here are some easy detox tips to gently cleanse your system:

Diet:

  • Eliminate refined sugar - Winter cravings can lead to increased sugar intake, putting a strain on your liver. Opt for fruits, which are rich in nutrients as a healthier alternative. Be mindful of your fruit choices to avoid blood sugar spikes, such as watermelon, pineapple, ripe bananas, mango, and papaya. If you consume them, pair them with healthy fats and proteins for a balanced snack.

  • Replace caffeine with herbal teas - Switching out your caffeine fix with some exercise during warmer weather can boost your endorphins. If you opt for caffeine, green tea is a healthier choice, otherwise go the herbal tea.

  • Ensure adequate water consumption - We know water flushes out toxins - but there is. a balance between adequate, inadequate and too much hydration. Calculate your daily water requirement by multiplying your weight by 33ml. Fill a non-plastic water bottle and aim to reach this intake daily.

  • Increase intake of vegetables and fruits - Prepare fresh dishes like soups, salads, spring stews, and stir-fries. Detox with juices made from fruits and vegetables like beetroot, broccoli, and celery. Try juicing at home whenever possible. While organic is preferable, using fruit and vegetable wash from health food stores can help clean non-organic produce.

Body:

  • Engage in Physical Activity

    • Exercise is highly recommended as it promotes liver function, aids in eliminating toxins, and supports the lymphatic system.

  • Try Castor Oil Wraps

    • This method effectively clears the lymphatics and encourages detoxification (refer to the detailed article below for instructions).

Mind & Spirit

  • Declutter Your Space

    • While it's important to keep cherished items, we often hold onto material possessions unnecessarily. Evaluate your belongings by going through your closets and drawers to energetically cleanse your surroundings.

  • Release Emotional Baggage

    • Emotional detox is essential as emotions can manifest as physical symptoms of high toxicity. Releasing feelings of resentment, anger, fear, guilt, and shame through journaling can be transformative. Spend five minutes daily on uncensored writing, exploring your emotions and allowing them to surface. Initially, you may encounter resistive thoughts, write these done, even if they don’t seem productive or relevant and with time, deeper emotions will emerge. Seek additional support like reiki, crystals, counselling, or kinesiology if needed for further emotional clearing.

When considering detoxification, it involves all avenues of elimination such as skin, bowel, kidneys, liver, and cardiovascular/respiratory systems. Various factors can impede the optimal function of these channels. Adequate elimination is pivotal to good health. If you believe your body could benefit from more comprehensive naturopathic care in this area, feel free to schedule an appointment.
